Officials Gather for Renaming of Route 301 [POLL]

It's official. Route 301 has a new name: The Hudson River Turnpike.

Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell, Director of Tourism Libby Pataki and other officials gathered to recognize the renaming of the roadway—which stretches 17 miles east and west across the County—during two press conferences Monday.

The gatherings were held near the endpoints of the route in Carmel and Cold Spring. Elected leaders unveiled new signs representing the "transition of the name" during the conferences, according to a press release.

Odell spoke about the renaming during her State of the County address earlier this year. She said that the move fits well with the "spirit of the Bicentennial," which folks have been celebrating all month.

"Other major highways create the north-south corridor to New York City, while Route 301 truly traverses through the heart of Putnam," Odell said during the presentation to a crowd of more than 150 people March 15. "The key purpose is to encourage intra-county tourism and revitalize the connection between East and West, and restore the historic integrity of this highway."
