Stuck Train Evacuated, 50-75 Abandoned Cars on Taconic, I-84
Recovery efforts are in place today on several levels.
Passengers stuck on a Metro-North train on the Harlem Line last night have been transported to a shelter at the Brewster firehouse, state police said today.
They had to wait it out in Southeast when fallen trees from the massive October nor'easter made it impossible for the train to continue toward Grand Central.
All modes of transportation tested even the greatest patience this weekend.
On the Taconic State Parkway and Interstate 84 — closed in many sections during the height of the storm — state police are working to identify all of the vehicles removed from roadways so far and will be contacting owners.
But there is still much left to be done in terms of clearing the roads.
About 50-75 vehicles remain on the Taconic and 84 but that "evacuations are being hampered by fallen trees and impassable roadways," police said.
Troopers released more information on shelters this morning:
"The shelters that were set up earlier in the evening in Kent and Hopewell have now been closed. New temporary locations have been established at the Hilton Garden Inn and the Courtyard by Marriott on State Route 9 in Fishkill. Again, State Police are requesting that only emergency calls be made at this time."
