CARMEL — NOV. 16: Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that, although it has been almost three weeks since Hurricane Sandy struck, the need for relief of its victims remains great. Many people still have no habitable home or are without heat, adequate food or other basic necessities. As Thanksgiving approaches, Sheriff Smith, the President of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association, is joining with his fellow sheriffs in announcing a donation drive to collect most needed items for the people of New York City, Long Island, and the surrounding New York counties that were severely impacted by the storm.
The donation drive is part of a statewide effort organized by the New York State Sheriffs’ Association in cooperation with the Salvation Army. Sheriffs’ offices around the state will collect donations of essential items during Thanksgiving week and the Sheriffs’ Association will coordinate delivery of the supplies to the Salvation Army for distribution to those in need.
“This week, as we celebrate Thanksgiving and give thanks for all of our blessings, it is a great time for us to reach out to the people of our state who have been hit so hard by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and share our blessings with them,” said Sheriff Smith. “Putnam County residents are well-known for their generosity, and I know we will respond to help our fellow New Yorkers to the extent we can."
Donations will be accepted at the Sheriff’s Office headquarters in Carmel beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 20 and ending on Tuesday, Nov. 27. The sheriffs’ offices are collecting the items listed below. For health reasons, donated items such as towels and blankets should be new. For logistical reasons, donations of used items, such as clothing and furniture, are not being collected at this time.
Most needed items:
- Baby diapers, wipes
- Batteries
- Cases of water
- Cleaning supplies
- Flashlights
- Garbage bags
- New, inexpensive towels
- New, inexpensive blankets
- Non-perishable foods
- Toiletries
- Work gloves
The sheriff’s office will not be accepting monetary donations, but it is recommended that such donations be made directly to the Salvation Army. Donation checks can be made payable to “The Salvation Army” and sent to its local office at:

The Salvation Army will use the donations to assist storm victims.
