NBC's Heroin Series Features Local Teacher and Addict

A Putnam resident who was teaching and raising a child while hiding her heroin addiction from the world is featured on a NBC News series this week, "America's Heroin Epidemic."

In an appearance on the Today show, the woman, who only used her first name, Michelle, said she taught while high on heroin and shot up in the teacher’s bathroom at her school.

“I was so irrational that I didn’t think twice if a teacher would walk in,” Michelle said on the Today show. “That was how irrational my thinking was.”

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office saw a three-fold jump in heroin seizures in 2013.
