Remembering Sandy: Putnam Aftermath, Deaths of North Salem Boys

At this time last year, Hurricane Sandy was just hours away from hitting Brewster, Southeast and the rest of the region.

Officials were urging folks to be prepared with charged cell phones, battery-powered radios, flashlights, essential medications and other necessities. Retailers were closing their doors early. First-responders were ready and waiting.

Sandy hit that night in the Hudson Valley. In North Salem, it claimed the lives of Jack Baumler, 11, and Michael Charles Robson, 13. The boys were watching television in a Bonnieview Road home when a tree came crashing down on the house. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The aftermath meant schools were closed for days. A shelter was opened in Putnam Valley and Hudson Valley Cerebral Palsy in Southeast functioned as a comfort station.

Long lines for gasoline were all over town and Metro-North trains ran on a special "Post-Sandy Recovery" schedule. Out-of-service traffic lights were common. Click here for photos of the scenes around town.

And a state of emergency was in effect during Halloween.

What do you remember about Oct. 29, 2012, and the days that followed? How were you impacted by Sandy? How have things changed around Brewster and Southeast since then?
