Fall Drama at Brewster High Opens Thursday

Using minimal props and sets, 50 Brewster High School (BHS) students will present Our Town this weekend, a classic American play that follows two small town families living everyday life and dealing with all that comes with it.

Written by Thornton Wilder in 1938, the play spans three acts and focuses on the Webb and Gibbs families as they do everything from sending the children to school each morning to calming pre-wedding fears to dealing with death.

A stage manager narrates the drama. In this case, it's local thespian Jan Anthony, who's worked with the BHS Theatre Department as a carpenter and scene designer for years.

"It has been quite a challenge for our students to create the town of Grovers Corners using no props or scenery," Director Richard F. Grasso said in a press release. "We have learned that so much theatre in the world does not need lavish scenery and ornate props in order to tell a simple and real story about life. This was Wilder's vision and it is astonishing and wonderful that so many theatre companies still re-create his work on the stage year after year. I am proud to be able to bring this work and my vision of the show to the Brewster Community."

Edward Albee, a Tony award winning playwright, called Our Town ""...the greatest American play ever written."

The show will run at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the high school's Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $12. They will be available at the door and may also be purchased here.
