SEX TRAFFICKING IN OUR BACKYARD

Statement on recent Human Trafficking Arrests

Assemblyman Steve Katz (R,C,I-Yorktown), like many in the Hudson Valley region, were horrified to learn of the string of recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests for human trafficking in the New York City suburbs.  A sex trafficking ring from Tenancingo, Mexico established multiple brothels across the state of New York and has resulted in 33 arrests since October of last year.

"People tend to think of human trafficking as a border state problem, but this isn't the case, as we're seeing an increase in sex trafficking in New York," Katz said.  "These women are coerced by a promise of a new and better life in America and are turned into modern day slaves for the traffickers.  We are too proud a state and nation to allow this kind of activity to take place.  I am encouraging all residents to support my legislation, which would help the victims and help law enforcement crack down on these rings and run them right out of New York."

Katz has sponsored Assembly Bill 6409, which would create a legal defense for those being trafficked and forced into prostitution.  The bill would also create mandatory minimum sentencing for those convicted of sex trafficking.  Additionally, the bill would establish the crime of human trafficking.  The bill has been referred to the Codes Committee.  To reach the Chair of the Codes Committee, please write to: Hon. Joseph R. Lentol, 619 Lorimer Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211.  The office can also be reached at (718) 383-7474.
