KATZ ENCOURAGES GUN OWNERS TO OPT-IN TO PRIVACY

Assemblyman Steve Katz (R,C,I-Yorktown) is reminding firearms owners to opt-in to the privacy provision of the SAFE Act that would prevent their permits from becoming public information. Earlier this year, The Journal News published the names of permit holders and linked that information to a map that displayed the location of the firearms owners' homes. "Starting today, any gun owners who have not filed paperwork to keep their firearms ownership private will have their information made public. Earlier this year, The Journal News published the pistol permit list and this provision of the SAFE Act was instituted to prevent this from happening again. I would encourage firearms owners in the 94th District to make this information private to prevent an incident like this from occurring again." If firearms owners have yet to file paperwork, their pistol permit information will be subject to Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests. The FOIL protection form can be found here: http://www.governor.ny.gov/nysafeact/foil-exemption-form. For any questions regarding the SAFE Act, please contact Katz's district office at (845) 628-3781. The assemblyman can also be reached at katzs@assembly.state.ny.us.
