After more than three years in business, a Main Street favorite in Brewster is closing.
will be a thing of the past come Jan. 1, according to owners. Kathy Maguire, who partners with her eponymous mother-in-law in operating the shop, said that Dottie is looking to retire.
"It's sad, but I just can't do it by myself," Kathy said Wednesday afternoon, as a handful of customers milled about the store. Dottie was not in at the time.
As folks perused the Erin sweaters, wool capes, children's garments and more, they commented on the "lovely store" the two Patterson residents have maintained over the years. Dottie's opened in June of 2008.
"They don't want us to close," said Kathy, who works full-time at another job. According to her, folks came all the way from Peeksill, and sometimes beyond, to get their fix of all things Irish. She said that the only stores she knows of that carry similar items are located in Yonkers and Danbury, CT.
But shoppers still have time to stock up on their favorite Celtic goods locally. All items, including furniture pieces, are on sale — at either 40 or 50 percent off — between now and the end of December. Owners could not say for sure which day would be their last.
Richard Ruchala, the landlord who oversees the 4 Main Street space, confirmed that the store is available as of Jan. 1, according to Michael Santos, a resident who moderates the online group Brewster10509.
In an email to the group Monday, Santos wrote that "Anyone interested [in the space] can make inquiries at at 12 Main Street, Ruchala said."
