Maloney Urges Department of Defense to Use New Flexibility to Limit Impact of Furloughs on Civilian Employees
Representative Sean Patrick Maloney has sent a letter to President Obama and Secretary Hagel urging the Department of Defense to reduce the impact of sequestration on civilian employees.
NEWBURGH – Representative Sean Patrick Maloney has sent a letter to President Obama and Secretary Hagel urging the Department of Defense to reduce the impact of sequestration on civilian employees. Last week, Rep. Maloney supported legislation to give more flexibility to the Pentagon on sequestration cuts and to shift more than $10 billion into Pentagon operations and maintenance accounts. Since February, Rep. Maloney has urged Congress to take swift action on a balanced plan to stop the devastating spending cuts that threaten local jobs and the Hudson Valley’s economy.
“Good, hardworking folks trying support their families shouldn’t have to suffer because the last Congress made some dumb decisions – I hope the President and Secretary Hagel can help to minimize the impact of these arbitrary cuts that will hurt thousands of families across the Hudson Valley,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney.

In his letter, Rep. Maloney stated: “As you consider plans to implement the sequester in the Department of Defense, I hope that you will consider a plan to reduce the impact of the sequester on the 800,000 civilian employees including thousands in the Hudson Valley. In these difficult economic times, I know that we all must make sacrifices. But our middle class has made enough sacrifices; our federal workforce has made enough sacrifices; our military and seniors have made enough sacrifices; the staff and students at West Point have made enough sacrifices.”

Last month, Rep. Maloney visited with officials from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to discuss current priorities and the impending damage of sequestration on West Point. Throughout the state, the sequester could cause approximately 12,000 civilian Department of Defense employees to be furloughed for up to 22 days including the 2,016 employees at the United States Military Academy in West Point and 406 at the New York Air National Guard's 105th Airlift Wing at Stewart Air National Guard Base.
