Maloney Applauds Dam Safety Act in Bipartisan Water Resources Development Act

Washington – Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) applauded the Senate passage of the bipartisan Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) which includes Rep. Maloney’s Dam Safety Act. This legislation, which passed the Senate by a vote of 83-14, helps secure and repair our nation’s dams, invests in our critical water resources infrastructure, and invests in flood risk protection programs against extreme weather events like Hurricanes Irene and Sandy.

“This is a victory for Hudson Valley families and communities,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. “The Dam Safety Act is a strategic investment in our communities that will create jobs and keep our families safe - there’s no time to waste for the House to pass this bipartisan legislation.”

Earlier this year, Representative Maloney introduced the Dam Safety Act to give communities the support they need to ensure dams have the highest safety standards. With over a 100 high hazard dams in the Hudson Valley posing a serious risk to communities and families, the Dam Safety Act of 2013 addresses the growing safety concerns caused by our nation’s aging dam infrastructure by reauthorizing the National Dam Safety Program (NDSP) which failed to be reauthorized last Congress.

Rep. Maloney is a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee which is expected take up the House version of the Water Resources Development Act in upcoming months.
