Maloney Applauds Senate Passage of ENDA

Washington, DC – Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) praised the final passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) which had the support 10 Republicans. Passed by a vote of 64-32, ENDA would prohibit discrimination in employment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Despite strong bipartisan support in both the House and Senate, Speaker Boehner is once again siding with the most radical Tea Partiers instead of doing the right thing for our country. The bipartisan Employment Non-Discrimination Act is a simple concept supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans - people should be evaluated based on their job performance, not who they love or who they are. It’s a disgrace that Speaker Boehner continues to his own partisan politics ahead of the American people,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney.

Currently, only 17 states prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, while an additional 4 states prohibit discrimination only on the basis of sexual orientation. Rep. Maloney is an original co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this year. There are currently 196 bipartisan co-sponsors of ENDA in the House.
