Maloney Condemns Tea Party Attempt to Block Women’s Access to Reproductive Health Care

Washington, DC – Representative Sean Patrick Maloney strongly opposed H.R. 1797, which attacks the Roe v. Wade protection of a woman's right to choose by banning almost all abortions after 20 weeks. Tea Party extremists forced the bill through the House Judiciary Committee along partisan lines with no exceptions to survivors of rape or incest. H.R. 1797 now requires a mandatory reporting requirement, forcing survivors of rape and incest to pursue a government permission slip.

"Instead of prioritizing jobs and the economy, Tea Party Republicans are focused on defunding Planned Parenthood and taking rights away from women across the Hudson Valley,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. “These radical attempts to block access to reproductive health care are just the latest Tea Party attack on women.”

This week, the White House issued a veto threat of H.R. 1797 citing that this bill would “unacceptably restrict women's health and reproductive rights and is an assault on a woman's right to choose.” H.R. 1797 is similar to laws in several states that have been ruled unconstitutional or faced court challenges.
