Maloney Urges FBI and GSA to Expedite Relocation of FBI Office to Stewart Airport

Newburgh, NY – After years of delay, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney announced his support for a new FBI office at Stewart Airport. This week, Maloney urged the Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Robert Muller and GSA Northeast Regional Administrator Denise Pease to expedite this relocation of the FBI New York Field Office’s Hudson Valley Resident Agency to Stewart Airport, in the Town of New Windsor.

“Opening a Newburgh area FBI office is a critical investment in our community, our local economy, and a crucial step to fight crime and revitalize our small cities and towns,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. “By partnering with the GSA, FBI, and Town of New Windsor, we’ve cut through red tape and made huge strides forward on our efforts to locate an FBI office by Newburgh.”

“I want to sincerely thank Rep. Maloney for all his efforts towards bringing the FBI Office to Stewart Airport -  his help has been immeasurable,” said Town Supervisor Green. “The FBI has played a significant role, along with local law enforcement, in helping to curb gang activity and violence in the area, and this facility is an important step in the development of Stewart Airport and the Town of New Windsor”.

In a letter sent to the FBI and GSA, Maloney states: “Although the FBI has made strides in fighting crime in Newburgh and the surrounding areas, we still have far to go […] Opening your [FBI] office in the Town of New Windsor at Stewart Airport will send a message to my neighbors that we are committed to Newburgh and the Hudson Valley. We have waited too long to free our communities from violence. I urge you to finalize this process without delay”.

Since taking office, Rep. Maloney has been in close contact with Town of New Windsor Supervisor, George Green, and the GSA to help expedite a relocation closer to Newburgh. Now, the Town of New Windsor is in the final stages of completing a lease agreement for this facility.  Recently, the GSA has completed its environmental review of the site at Stewart Airport and is restarting design meetings for this location. Supervisor Green expected construction of the 24,000 square foot facility at the 140-acre business park to be completed in early 2014.

In 2010, the FBI indicated it had outgrown its current facility in Goshen and would be moving the Hudson Valley Resident Agency closer to the City of Newburgh, where the agency has done a tremendous amount of work in the past several years.  However the GSA, which manages office space decisions for the federal government, released a plan in 2011 that excludes the city from the “delineated area” where the new office would be located. Since taking office, Rep. Maloney has worked to move the relocation closer to Newburgh, where he opened his district office at the Old Courthouse at 123 Grand Street.
