History: Putnam Hospital Needed $400,000 to Open in 1964

The top headlines on the cover of the Brewster Standard 48 years ago included news about local Rotarians, a block party in the Village of Brewster and fundraising efforts for a hospital that had yet to open.

That's according to the Thursday, July 16, 1964 issue of the Brewster Standard, available online via the . The paper existed from 1870 to 1982, and covered the Brewster-Southeast area, as well as Danbury (CT), Pawling, Peekskill, Poughkeepsie, White Plains and Yonkers.

Several obituaries and engagement announcements were published on the first page. The following headline ran across the top of it: "$400,000 Needed to Open Putnam Community Hospital Nov. 15th."

Another big story in that issue was the recent graduation of a Brewster man from the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport (RI). 

A small notice at the bottom left-hand corner of the page took up a few lines:

School Bond Election

Qualified voters of School District No. 1 of Southeast, Patterson and Carmel will vote on Aug. 11 to bond the district for $250,000 to cover work needed on three school buildings of this district.
