Town of Southeast Continues to Accept Donations for 2013 Fireworks

Anyone interested in contributing may write to southeastny@gmail.com.

The pot of money earmarked for a 2013 Town of Southeast fireworks was at about $200 as of last week—far from the $10,000 threshold previous shows ran.

Councilman Bob Cullen provided that number, shortly after sending a reminder about donations to the online group Brewster10509.

"If anyone wants to send a donation thru [sic] PayPal to fund community fireworks on July 4 2013," he wrote, "the email address to use is Southeastny@gmail.com."

Cullen and other officials decided to seek financial support from the public after many residents sounded off on the lack of official fireworks in Southeast this Independence Day. The Town sponsored shows regularly in the past, but they came to a halt because of what Supervisor Tony Hay called "financial problems." He declared a fiscal emergency when he took office in January.

Anyone interested in donating may contact Cullen at RCullen@southeast-ny.gov for more information.

I would be willing to make a small donation, but what happens if they don't raise enough money? Will my donation be refunded?

Hi Susan. Thanks for that great question. Definitely a valid one. I passed it along to Councilman Bob Cullen, and here's what he said: "As long as we have the info. to refund, we will ... Let's not be negative. We will raise the funds!" Cullen did say he's unsure of how a refund would work through PayPal. Checks are an option, too. If you want to go that route, you can find details on where to send it in this story: http://southeast.patch.com/articles/talk-of-2013-fireworks-comes-early-poll.

A few more donations have come in over the last week or so, according to a Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/events/181391445329296/?fref=ts) where organizers are updating supporters. They're hoping to land some corporate sponsors, too.
