Manhunt in Putnam for LI Shooting Suspect

[Update, 3:50 p.m.] Cold Spring resident Melissa Scanga has lived here all her life and has "always felt safe," she said Thursday afternoon as she stood in the parking lot at Spring Brook Condominiums. A heavy police presence and lots of television news crews were in the immediate area.
"Things like this don't happen here," she said.

Scanga—whose 9-year-old was very nervous when she learned the reason school was canceled Thursday morning—was visiting with her sister and getting some fresh air. At one point she asked a state trooper if it was OK to be out in the open. She told Patch she felt safe because there were so many officials around.

It's unfortunate for Cold Spring to be on the news for an incident like this, Scanga said. She wondered how the alleged gunman found himself in this area—and whether he has been here before.

If Kim is still at large Friday, Scanga said she's going to become nervous.
Police have yet to announce additional press conferences. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call a tip-line at 845-808-4350.

[Update, 2:50 p.m.]
More than 100 people have been involved in the search so far, and resources have ranged from air to ground to maritime, Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith said at a press conference with Michael Kopy of the New York State Police, April Brooks of the FBI and others officials Thursday afternoon.

"We don't want to be alarmists," Smith said, but "we have a fugitive" on the loose.

Officials are urging local folks to keep their doors locked and report anything suspicious at 845-225-4300.

There will be extra security at Haldane schools tomorrow.

[Update, 2:05 p.m.]
The search for the Sang Ho Kim is continuing, Smith said during a press conference that wrapped up at about 1 p.m. He was joined by members of several other law enforcement agencies, including the the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New York State Police and the New York State Parks Police.

Officials are unsure if Kim—who they consider to be armed and dangerous—is alive and are exploring several different scenarios.

State troopers are blocking the entrance to northbound Route 9D in Cold Spring and checking the trunks of southbound vehicles approaching the Main Street intersection as authorities search for Sang Ho Kim, the suspect in yesterday's Long Island shooting.

Kim is accused of opening fire at a lighting company Wednesday morning, killing one and seriously injuring another. His car was found here in Putnam County late Wednesday.

Helicopters are buzzing overhead. Reporters from several New York-based news agencies are here, too.

"I only know bits and piece but it's pretty shocking," said Zach Merante, who works at Whistling Willie's, a restaurant in the village, and lives near the area police are searching.

Merante said he didn't hear anything overnight but woke up Thursday morning to texts from family members and friends about the police activity—and a helicopter that sounded like it was "right above" his house.

A resident in Cold Spring for most of his life, Merante said he couldn't remember anything like this ever happening in the village.

The Haldane school district has canceled all classes and activities for the day and police have urged residents of the Cold Spring-Philipstown area to keep their doors locked and to call 911 if they see anything suspicious, according to the Putnam County News and Recorder.
