Danbury Mineral Show Reminder – also remember to Shop Locally or Lose the Privilege

Hi again folks!  Local schools start this week, and then take a break for Rosh Hashanah (aka “Jewish New Year”).  If you will be staying in the area over the long weekend, please consider visiting the Danbury Mineralogical Society’s Jewelry, Gem & Mineral Show at New Milford High School (see my last post for details, as well as info about the Poughkeepsie show later in the month).  ( http://www.newmilfordps.org/subsite/nhs )

I’ve written (here, I believe, as well as in the local paper, and in our club bulletin) about regional indie jewelers from time to time, as they relate to a gem material, provenance, etc.   I haven’t been out and about as much this season, but I’m looking forward to visiting Aljan Jewelers in Mahopac between September 18 and 21, to check out their Trollbeads Trunk Show and see the fall release beads up close and personal.  (http://aljanjewelersltd.com/)

I also plan to visit Bella Jewelers, an indie shop in New Milford CT, because they are closing.  I was sad to read that this week; however, sale hunters take note – everything in the store is apparently 30% - 70% off.  I have enjoyed knowing Michelle and Peter Fusaro for some years and will be sorry to see them go.  (http://www.bellajewelers.org/)

After my last PET scan I couldn’t get my wedding ring set back on, and when it turned out that that was going to be a long-term state of affairs I took the rings to the Mexican Shack in Somers, where Robert Inghilterra did a perfect (and economical) job resizing them.  Unlike mall shops and “big box” stores, indie shops are unique.  You don’t walk into any of the places listed above and think even for half a second that you are in another.   Whether you are treating yourself or shopping for a special occasion gift, please support local and indie retailers (jewelers and others).

Online shopping is another topic entirely.  I keep meaning to do an informational piece about European charm beads… from the original (Trollbeads, 1976) through the most popular copycats (Pandora (1996 for their bead bracelets), Chamilia (2002) and Ohmbeads (2008)), to some of the more interesting modern brands worldwide (Red Bali Frog,  Landmark Beads by Carina, MelinaWorld, Evolve New Zealand, Clogau of Wales, etc.).  I’d love to hear Patch readers’ thoughts about their jewelry, favorite retailers (local or online), etc.  Thanks!
