Brewster High School China Trip: May 19 and 20, Days 1 and 2

A look into the thoughts of Brewster High School students and faculty as they embark on their two-week China trip, which began May 20.

Leaving Brewster High School this morning at 6:45 for our flight out of Newark, we were full of excitement. A bit drowsy from limited sleep due to last minute packing, we were ready for an amazing experience.

Taking the northern passage route, we flew over Canada, Greenland, and Northern Europe.

Polar landscapes and immense ice flows dominated the earth below. Limited cloud cover allowed safe viewing of frigid majesty’s enormity from 35,000 feet in the air.

While in-flight, our students engaged in eclectic conversation with each other and students from our partner school – Croton.  Conversations were organic and impromptu.  Would they be interacting the same way if found in the same high school cafeteria?  Would they sit at the same table?  Would they gravitate toward one another if registered in the same class?  Would fate bring them together regardless of their circumstances?

We arrived in Shanghai after being on the plane for over 15 hours.  Shanghai is twelve hours
ahead of us, so we landed on Friday May 20 at 1:30 pm, or 1:30 am Brewster time. Once in
Shanghai, we passed through customs and took a bus Jian Ping High School to meet host
families.

When we arrived at Jian Ping High School, hosting students were waiting for us.  Many students had been communicating via email, and were excited to meet.  Both Chinese and Brewster students had filled out questionnaires to match them with the most compatible host families. Watching students from both countries meet their hosts for the first time was exciting.

Once matched up, students left Jian Ping High School for weekend visits with host families.
