Brewster High School China Trip: May 23, Day 5

A look into the thoughts of Brewster High School students and faculty as they begin to get settled in China.

After being formally welcomed by the principal of Jian Ping High School, we were instructed in how to make Chinese knots. Not being familiar with Chinese knots, we did not know what to expect. As it turns out, knot in Chinese means “reunion, friendliness, warm, etc.”

Everyone was able to make a knot, some more successfully than others. Our instructor was amazingly patient, letting us know that “impatience leads to error.”

As we walked across campus, we were greeted by a large large sign welcoming us.  The sign is up all week, a warm reminder of our host’s caring.

Our students then spent some time meeting the Chinese students who will be visiting this summer. It was hard to tell who was more excited. Several of our students have already expressed interest in hosting their host sister or brother this summer.

Our day culminated with a trip to the Shanghai Museum and People’s Way. The museum is
home to artifacts representing thousands of years of China’s rich history. Beginning with sculptures at the entrance, the museum gave us visceral insight into how rich China’s culture is.
