Brewster Mayor Hit By Car in Village

Village of Brewster Mayor Jim Schoenig sustained shoulder injuries Friday morning when he was struck by a vehicle on North Main Street, according to police.

Schoenig was using the crosswalk by the Brewster Flower Garden as he headed toward the train station when a 2006 Suzuki hit him, Brewster Police Chief John DelGardo told Patch.

The accident occurred at about 7 a.m. The vehicle was turning left onto North Main from Ellen Avenue.

The mayor reportedly landed on the vehicle's windshield before rolling off and into the street. When Brewster Police and members of the Brewster Fire Department (BFD) arrived, he was still sitting on the ground and his arm was bleeding from lacerations.

BFD ambulance transported Schoenig to Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel where he was treated and later released. He said he sustained a dislocated and fractured shoulder, which may need surgery.

The driver of the vehicle, a 21-year-old Carmel man, said he had a green light, according to DelGardo.

"It was pouring rain," DelGardo said. "The weather conditions were very poor. There was lots of traffic at that time in the morning at that location. When he went to make the left turn he did not see the mayor."

The mayor told officials he had a "walk" signal.

"It was just an unfortunate accident," DelGardo said, adding that no tickets were issued.

Car-versus-pedestrian accidents are fairly uncommon in the village, according to the police chief. A woman sustained minor injuries when a cab hit her last August.
