[Update, published at 5:15 p.m. Friday, July 12] Two people—one of whom was trapped in his car for about an hour—sustained injuries Friday morning during a three-vehicle crash in Southeast.
The accident occurred shortly around 7:30 a.m. on Route 6, when a 64-year-old Carmel man, traveling eastbound in a 2006 Honda Civic, attempted to pass a pickup truck that was pulling a trailer.
Authorities say the Civic struck a westbound 2002 Honda sedan. A 34-year-old Brewster woman was driving.
The impact of the crash, which also involved the pickup, caused the Civic to roll over a guide rail and down an embankment, according to officials. It landed on its side, next to the Middle Branch Reservoir.
First-responders from Brewster and Carmel fire departments extricated the Carmel man, who was trapped for more than an hour, Brewster Fire Department Chief Bill Rieg said. He reportedly sustained chest and leg injuries, and was treated by TransCare paramedics at the scene. Stat Flight emergency medical helicopter transported him to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.
The woman driving the other Honda was taken by ambulance to Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. Neither her injuries, nor those of the Carmel man, were minor, Rieg said.
The operator of the pickup truck, a 43-year-old Patterson man, was not hurt.
Officials kept the road closed for several hours while members of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office investigated. The New York State Department of Environmental Police and Hazmat Unit responded because the accident occurred close to the water.
