Police Find Putnam Man Skateboarding in Middle of Route 6

Officials in Carmel provided the following information. It does not indicate a conviction.

A 21-year-old Mahopac resident told officials this weekend he was skateboarding down the double yellow line on Route 6 because he "likes taking risks," cops said.

Officer Stephen Kunz came upon the man at about 3:10 a.m. Sunday, near the Dom D'Agostino nursery in Mahopac.

"The skateboarder nearly was struck by a vehicle driving on the roadway," Carmel Police Chief Mike Johnson said in a statement. "Upon questioning by Officer Kunze, the skateboarder advised the officer that he liked taking risks."

Kunze could smell marijuana on the man's clothing, officials say. He admitted smoking pot a short while earlier, and a subsequent search revealed "two large zip lock bags of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana."

The defendant is facing a violation: unlawful possession of marijuana. Police released him pending a Nov. 27 appearance in Carmel Justice Court.
