Sheriff: Man Faces Charges After Fleeing Police in Southeast

He turned himself in at the agency's headquarters a few hours after the incident.

Police have arrested a 44-year-old Danbury, CT man who they say ignored a deputy's attempt at a traffic stop in Southeast by driving "at a high rate of speed" and crossing over the state line.

Jeffrey Lockhart, of South King Street, is facing misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment and third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, according to a statement released by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office Tuesday.

Deputy Sheriff Thomas Lee made the arrest when Lockhart surrendered himself at the agency's headquarters in Carmel shortly after the incident. Lee tried to stop the defendant—who had committed several traffic violations on Route 22 before turning onto Milltown Road in Southeast—at about 4 a.m. Sunday, officials say.

"When the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle, the driver fled from the deputy at a high rate of speed into the State of Connecticut," authorities said.

After the arrest, Lockhart posted $250 cash bail. Police released him pending a March 14 appearance in Southeast Justice Court.
