Southeast Man Accused of Driving Off While Ex Hangs On to Car Door

A 24-year-old Southeast man is facing a felony assault charge after a dispute that left his ex-girlfriend in critical condition, according to police.

State troopers from the Southeast barracks arrested Daniel T. Dwyer Wednesday. The incident, which occurred at about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, started with a verbal dispute in the parking lot of Las Mañanitas restaurant on Route 22.

"The defendant entered his vehicle and attempted to leave the parking lot," police said in a statement. "He was aware that the victim was holding on to the passenger door as he dragged her with his vehicle approximately 100 feet."

The victim was transported to Danbury Hospital in Connecticut and admitted. She is listed in critical but stable condition, authorities said Thursday.

Dwyer, whose license is suspended, is facing a felony charge of second-degree assault and a misdemeanor charge of second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Following arraignment before Village of Brewster Judge Richard O'Rourke, Dwyer was sent to the Putnam County Correction Facility on $1,000 bail. He was due in Southeast Justice Court Thursday (Dec. 5) afternoon.
