Brewster Seeks Funding Opportunity as Opportunity Area: Media Report

New York state designates Opportunity Areas as eligible for extra funding for economic development.

Brewster village officials have applied to become one of New York State's "Opportunity Areas," reports The Examiner.

Meghan Taylor, president of the Putnam County Economic Development Corporation, told The Examiner that "The aim of the initiative is to target funding towards communities most in need."

Indications of economic distress include residents' income levels, level of homeownership, etc.

Brewster is the only community in Putnam County that has applied for the designation, the Examiner said.

Brewster residents and officials have been working on plans to revive the village.

They began a series of "Envision Brewster" sessions in July.

Also earlier this month officials signed an agreement with Covington Development for urban renewal work.  That document notes the goal of urban renewal is to rid Brewster of blight and deterioration while promoting economic growth and development.
