FEMA Registrations in Westchester Outstrip Putnam

Officials release number of claims throughout Hudson Valley region.

Claims for government assistance in Westchester following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy have outstripped requests for aid in Putnam and surrounding areas, new statistics reveal today.

The storm—which slammed the Lower Hudson Valley region in late October, and claimed four local lives—had yielded 5,545 FEMA registrations in Westchester alone.

FEMA aid helps residents who cannot recoup damage costs through insurance, but a registree can only receive funds to repair their primary residence.

The Westchester numbers—which do not account for popular density—dwarf those of some nearby counties. As of Jan. 21, Putnam had 347 registrations and Rockland 3,183.

Orange County has had 1,097, Sullivan 491 and Ulster 247, added Nathan Custer, a FEMA public information officer.
