Your LIRR Commute After Sandy

With commuter anger boiling over repairs to East River Tunnels, we want to know how your Northport commute has been going.

There have been many challenges in the area since Hurricane Sandy struck last month, but one of the biggest has been fixing our damaged rail system.

A major issue has been the repair of two East River tunnels owned by Amtrak which the Long Island Rail Road uses to get into Manhattan.

Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington, held a press conference in which he said he received assurances from Amtrak that the tunnels would be repaired by Christmas week.

but your statement was "for the last 2 years it has never arrived at 5:30. Not once" which is it? JD you apparently would not be happy unless it has 100% perfect on time performance and that is not going to happen. Using November as a barometer is not any indication of service levels. Also did you know that any point if the train is 7 minutes late at any station along its scheduled stops it is deemed to be late? so if the 4:19 is 7 minutes late at Mineola but only 3 minutes at Huntington the train is then put on the report? Personally i would rather be safe and possibly be a few minutes late then be put at risk. JD if you have not been on time for 2 years maybe you are cutting it to close and should take an earlier train? or drive? or review your time management

The train is scheduled to arrive at Northport at 5:30. I want the train to arrive at Northport at 5:30. Perhaps it is late from time time, that would be acceptable, but it is never on time, it is always late, that is unacceptable. Why should I review my time management? I show up on time to get on the train so my time management seems to be working just fine. The LIRR fails to deliver me to my location on time so perhaps they (or you, as an employee) should be working on their time management skills. I don't care about any of the stations in between. The LIRR publishes a schedule that says the train should arrive at 5:30. The LIRR fails to deliver on their published schedule.

Yes, Mr Dillworth's statement seems pretty straightforward to me. Occasional snafu's are bound to happen, but no train should be consistently late; it has nothing to do with safety, as it's a matter of professional competence (or lack thereof).
