Pet Food Recall! Salmonella May Lurk In Your Pet's Food Bowl

When I go to a restaurant, do you know the first thing I check? I check the cleanliness of the bathroom. A bathroom can tell you so much about the way a business operates its establishment and the standards of cleanliness that the leaders hold for their team members. In food service, it is completely essential that proper hand washing is cultivated as a culture among the team or...people can end up very sick!

That brings me to my next point, Salmonella. This is a bacteria which is introduced into the intestines through lack of hand-washing in the bathroom or is transferred from humans to the intestinal tract by handling eggs which have salmonella on them or the handling of pets such as baby chickens and turtles.

As you may know I work at an animal hospital and recently I came across some information that made my stomach turn. Pro-Pet an Ohio based pet food manufacturer has recalled several brands of cat and dog food due to Salmonella! This is not only a hazard to your pets but it can also affect you because salmonella is a bacteria which not only will have your dog or cat vomiting, and suffering from diarrhea but without the proper handling will have you sick as well!

Check the food label and make sure that your pet's food brand is not listed! If you do find that your pet's food is on the list, be sure to wash your hands after touching the stash and watch your dog or cat to see if they start to behave in a way which is unusual.
