About 1,850 Voters Turn Out; School Budget Passes

Officials announced the results around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday in the lobby of the high school.

The 2012-2013 Brewster Central School District $84 million budget passed by about 300 votes Tuesday night.

District Clerk Susan Gavin announced the results, which included 1,073 votes in favor of the budget and 771 against. The three candidates whose names appeared on the ballot for the three open spots—which each carry three-year terms—on the Board of Education were elected with the following numbers:

  •  (incumbent) — 1,266
  •  (incumbent) — 1,224
  •  —1,238

 received 132 votes.

The results came in around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday. A group of about 15 people, including Superintendent Dr. Jane Sandbank, Board of Education trustees, building administrators and community members, waited for the numbers in the lobby of . Many of them cheered and hugged when Gavin announced the results.

Voter turnout was down from last year, when 1,272 opted for the budget, and 934 blacked in the "no" circle on the ballot sheet. 

The 2012-2013 budget comes in at $84,074,419. That's a 2.2 percent hike from this year's budget, which totals at $82,235,776. It eliminates several part and full-time instructional positions from a range of departments—reading, math, social studies, speech and more. It also slashes a number of non-instructional jobs. 

With a tax levy increase of 1.8 percent, the budget meets the requirements of the newly imposed tax cap. Individual school taxes depend on the assessment of a resident's home.
