'Tis the season ... Already?

Starting the holiday season early does not make it more enjoyable.

Time flies when you have stuff to buy. Every year, the holiday season seems to begin earlier and earlier; it’s almost two months until Christmas, but many stores are already bedecked in red and green. Call me a curmudgeon, but I’m just not ready for the holidays.

Last week’s snowstorm may have brought a prematurely wintery feeling to the Northeast, but advertisers and merchants were gearing up for the holiday shopping season before that; some stores brought out their Christmas wares at the end of September.

I know people like to get their holiday shopping done in advance, but this is a little bit too much. Won’t people get tired of looking at Christmas decorations after two months? By the time December rolls around, anticipation might turn into apathy.

Christmas shopping usually stimulates the economy and, after a hurricane and a snowstorm, we could all use a break. However, starting the holiday season early will only create monotony. After the gifts are bought and the decorations are put up, people will want to actually celebrate their respective winter holidays, but those holidays will still be at least a month away. Life already moves at a fast pace, we shouldn’t let corporations tell us when to start celebrating our holidays.
