3 Things to Check Out Around Putnam This Weekend

There are tons of ways to keep busy around Brewster and Southeast this weekend, and we're here to help you decide which happenings are for you. Here are the details for three great events (click on the links for more information). Scroll down to the end of this article for information on a few more.

Brewster Fire Department Open House

When: Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday

Where: Brewster firehouse on North Main Street in the village

Why go? Show your support for our local fire department volunteers while you watch a live burn (scheduled for 3 p.m.) and a vehicle rescue (scheduled for 1 p.m.). For the youngsters, there will be firetruck rides, pony rides, a fire safety house and a chance to talk to Sparky the Fire Dog. Visit the fire department's website for more information.

Where: Brewster firehouse on North Main Street in the village

Why go? Resident Andrew Gordon is working on an Eagle Scout project that would honor the firefighters who have served. The finished product will be a reflection area at the fire department's sub station at the corner of North Brewster Road and Route 312. This event will raise money for the project. Tickets are $10 ($5 for kids ages 5 to 12).

It's a Hoe Down! Family Fun Day

When: Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday

Where: Cloverbrook Farm at 400 Quaker Hill Road in Pawling

Why go? Hosted by Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue, this event will feature a BBQ lunch, hay and pony rides and a birds of prey show. Revelers can also enjoy country music and line dancing instruction. All proceeds go to supporting the 140 thoroughbreds under Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue’s care. Akindale cares for thoroughbreds in rehabilitation and retraining those no longer able to race, and also promotes awareness of equine slaughter. Tickets cost $40 and also include pumpkin decorating, raffles, and a silent auction for adults.
