I was disappointed to hear that the two reading positions which they planned to cut will still be…Read More cut. That's five reading positions cut in the last 3 years. I'm not sure why the district is weakening an already weak program. Our 3rd grade state reading scores were the second lowest in Putnam County this year. (We had the second highest scores before they started cutting the reading program 3 years ago.). With scores spiraling downward, I would think that the administration should be strengthening the reading program not weakening it. If our kids can't read....what will they be able to do?? While I understand it's hard to decide where to make cuts - reading of all things should never be skimped on. I worry that without a strong reading program our students will suffer in years to come. Sadly, the administrators making these short sighted decisions will have moved on by the time these kids get to high school and realize they don't have the skills they need to be successful.

I think you will find another article on the patch that states that another administration position…Read More is being added. They needed 5 people because 4 wasn't enough. I guess that's "doing the same with more".
Regarding the flyer I got in the mail yesterday: what are "student services"? I think this line item is almost $5 million .

According to their own budget: Administration is set for a 4.2% increase with "other"…Read More doubling from $35k to $75k. What is "Other?" Teaching gets a 1.01% increase, and "Miscellaneous" gets a 0.99% increase. Unfortunately, "Miscellaneous" includes employee benefits which go from $21 million to $23 million, which is the largest increase in the district by category. Oh, and while we're at it, let's take $1/2 million out of Special Education. How can I get a job here? I would forgo a salary increase for those kind of benefits too. Farewell Mrs. Sandbank. Voting no this year. Oh, and no new buses either. One maybe, but not four.

More administrators, higher salaries with less teachers and students. Who is going to fill the hole…Read More in my pocketbook?

Here's what Brewster's newest addition—who is leaving Clarkstown at the end of this school…Read More year—told New City Patch (http://patch.com/A-3Ptt):
"It is a different position from my existing one and I am fortunate to have this opportunity. Brewster like Clarkstown is a wonderful district. Clarkstown is filled with outstanding professionals and I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with them. I look forward to joining my new team in Brewster."

In addition to full day kindergarten, I hope they decide to keep the 2 reading positions that they…Read More were planning to cut. Three years ago our 3rd grade reading scores were the 2nd highest in Putnam County. This year - after cutting 3 reading positions in the last 3 years - our 3rd grade reading scores were the 2ND LOWEST in Putnam County. With reading scores spiraling down, I hope the administration rethinks this important decision and decides to put more emphasis on reading. We should be striving to have the best reading scores in Putnam County not the worst.

Did the budget include the salaries for four SRO officers at $100,000 a pop including benefits? I…Read More hope the district doesn't think that the County will pick up the tab. At Protective Services committee on Wednesday, it seems that the district would have to. After listing Cuomo's budget increases to the districts, I commented to Legislator Gross that I hoped that the district doesn't divert the funds or any funds allocated for education especially to special ed, the arts and Pre-K to meet the costs for SROs. To which he responded that the safety of the children was paramount, Unmeet needs of the most vulnerable children were the cause of some of the horrific massacres, I retorted.

Hi Ashley,
Could someone provide an update to this article related to the status of full day…Read More Kindergarten at JFK? I as well as other parents I know have either registered for private school or arranged after care or enrichment programs for next year based on the assumption that JFK was going to be half day, so it would be helpful to know where the proposition stands, specifically: a/ will it be part of the budget vote and b/if so, would it be subject to being cut of the budget doesn't pass or is it protected because it is funded by State aid?
Thank you!
