Pond at Wells Park To Be Closed, Filled

Wells Park in the Village of Brewster was recently the topic of conversation on Brewster10509, the Yahoo email group.

Here's what Town of Southeast councilwoman Lynne Eckardt said about the park:

"The pond at Wells Park used to be for swimming. Because of changes in the health code the pond no longer met swimming standards (I believe that the DEP was also involved in this decision) thus the pond is to be closed and filled. Our Highway Department is doing the work on this. In another reminder, the spray park at Wells Pond will not be reopened this summer as it cost taxpayers $35,000 to operate and the attendance last year was miniscule."

Other local folks joined the discussion, too.

"The spray park is something only preschool children to maybe fourth grade would like," Southeast councilman Bob Cullen said, adding that last year, an average of five youngsters used the park each day.

Some days, the spray park saw no children.

Steven Mattson, a Southeast resident, offered a reason for that:

"I suspect that is because, believe it or not, many people just don't know it exists," he wrote.

The town would like to reopen Wells Camp next summer, and that would mean the spray park would reopen, too, Cullen said.
