Police: Crash That Left 'Massive Injuries' Involved Possible Mechanical Problem

Editor's note: This story was originally published at 9:30 a.m. Friday (June 28).

A serious crash on Route 22 in Southeast Thursday night left two people with "massive injuries" and another two with "various injuries," New York State Police said Friday morning.

A fifth person involved walked away without any, according to state troopers.

Officials closed the roadway for about five hours for investigation following the 7:30 p.m. accident.

Here's what authorities from the Southeast barracks said in a statement:

"Investigation revealed that a local couple was traveling southbound on Route 22. They indicated a possible mechanical problem that caused their vehicle to accelerate to a high rate of speed. Witnesses indicated this vehicle had its hazard lights on and the operator was honking his horn. At the intersection of Route 312 this vehicle continued at a high rate of speed into the northbound lanes and struck head on another vehicle that was stopped in the northbound left turn lane. This vehicle was occupied by one person who did not sustain any injuries. The initial vehicle continued southbound in the northbound lanes striking a second vehicle head on in the northbound lane, rolling over and coming to rest in the northbound lane. The two occupants of the second vehicle sustained massive injuries. The operator and passenger of the first vehicle also sustained various injuries. Three victims were treated at Danbury Hospital and the fourth victim was admitted to Westchester County Medical Center in serious condition."

Officials are continuing their probe into the crash. They ask anyone with "important information" relating to the investigation to call 845-279-8656.
