New Highway Superintendent: Minor Road to Reopen As Soon As Possible

Minor Road was closed to through traffic in early October so a culvert pipe could be replaced. The project was initially scheduled to wrap up by Nov. 1, but the street is still blocked off.

Mike Bruen, the new superintendent of the Town of Southeast Highway Department, is aiming to finish the job as soon as possible.

"We will have the road open before, we hope, the snow season," he told Patch Monday afternoon. "It's going to be a requirement for us to do that so we can maintain the road properly."

Bruen is assessing open projects, as Monday was his first day on the job. Kevin Palmer retired and town board members appointed Bruen to fill the position earlier this month.

The project is a "high priority," Bruen said. The pipe was damaged during a storm. It runs beneath the roadway and carries water from the Bog Brook Reservoir.

Highway department superintendent is an elected position. The unexpired term Bruen is serving expires Nov. 4, 2014.

Bruen has experience in construction and landscaping. He's owned his own company and managed several others. He ran for the highway superintendent position several years ago.
