VIDEO: Undefeated Bears Talk Tonight's Playoff Game

Top-seeded Brewster, in League 2, is set to take on fourth-seeded Walter Panas High School, in League 1, at home on the turf. The Bears will be sporting bleach-blond hair.

The success of Brewster's varsity football team this year can be attribute to a combination of chemistry, hard work and talent, players and coaches say.

It's a recipe that earned the 35-member team an undefeated record for the regular season. The Bears are hoping to keep the momentum going during Thursday (Oct. 25) night's playoff game at home, against Walter Panas High School.

"We don't have any common opponents so we can't even judge that way," Coach Ed Mulvihill said with a smile earlier this week. "We saw film on them and they have film on us, so we're doing the best we can."

This is Mulvihill's first year as head coach for the varsity football team. He said his plan going into the season was to mix some key moves from the squad's prior years with a few new elements and shifts. Mulvihill told Patch that the plan has worked out well.

"They're a good group of players that really work hard," he said. "It's been a joy to coach them."

Earlier in the week, some of the players said the team was practicing better than ever before, perhaps because of the high morale. At that time, many of them had bleach-blond hair—something the players vowed to do if they remained undefeated and landed a spot in the playoffs.

Another thing that's added to the Bears' success, Mulvihill said, is the fact that many players played in local leagues as youngsters.

"I think our youth program has done a great job of getting these kids ready throughout the years. and I think you're seeing a culmination of some of their efforts," he said, referring to the Brewster Bruins. "They do a great job in the lower levels, in our fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh grade programs, and I think these kids coming through now are a product of them as much as they are us."

Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. If Brewster wills, they'll play again at home Tuesday.
