Brewster Ice Arena Adds Outdoor Rink

The official opening of the outdoor rink at the Brewster Ice Arena in Southeast will likely take place in the next week or two, according to owner Steve Santini.

Construction began on the facility at the end of September. The goal was to be up and running about a month ago, but minor changes came up along the way, Santini said.

The new addition is regulation size, and it sits behind the main building. It will be used primarily for youth practices. Certain programs, like girls hockey, have seen big increases in recent years.

"It just gives the kids extra ice time, more flexibility," Santini said, adding that there will also be some general skating sessions. "Really, this sheet is about accommodating many of the people who are already here."

Santini, a Mahopac resident, opened the arena in 1997 with a single rink, a snack bar and pro shop. A year later a second rink was added. In 2000, a studio rink was built on the second floor. Then came Players Sports Bar and Restaurant, a banquet facility and a fitness center.

The facility draws customers from as far as 45 miles away.
