Vacancies: Building Near Thunder Ridge

Put aside all the regulations, restrictions and rules—we're asking you what type of establishment would make the most sense in this space.

Let's call this a modern spin on community planning; a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table.

We present a vacant space or property and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use. Forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules and all the other zoning jargon that puts most people to sleep. What would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community?

Our inaugural installment of this column received a couple of great suggestions, as did our subsequent posts. Now, we're hoping you'll weigh in on the vacant space that sits in front of Thunder Ridge Ski Area on Route 22 in Patterson.

Once a restaurant, the large, one-level building has been empty for some time. With an attraction like Thunder Ridge so close, a number of businesses would probably do well. So, we want to know: What type of establish should go there?

Please leave your answer in the comments section below. Thanks for participating!

About this column: In highlighting vacant buildings in Southeast and Brewster, we aim to help residents take a proactive role in planning and building their community. We'll run this column every other Friday and, when appropriate, take your feedback to public officials and property owners, to inform their decisions about future uses. Know of a vacant building we should highlight? Email Ashley.Tarr@patch.com.

I am familiar with this property. I would LOVE to see a casual, Starbuck's type establishment, focusing on hot chocolate, burgers and salads during the winter and ice cream, yogurt and salads during the summer months. The building could be divided, perhaps, and have a t-shirt, casual clothing area in the remaining space.

How about a dance club. There is nothing to do around here in the evening. To avoid long drives and costly taxi fares how about a place where young people and singles of all ages can go to dance.Something like the Town Crier but with a younger entertainment line up including comedy.Something like Molly Darcys in Danbury but closer to home.It would give locals a place to hang out and have some fun!

how about a starbucks/bookstore type place. People could meet and relax after skiing and in the summer it's always nice to have a place to go sit and relax outside.

If Ski Haus was smart they would relocate to this space or take part of it at least

Definitely allow it to be divided. It's a real barn of a space.

There was a motel on the grounds at one point. Perhaps a Motel?

Keep it Simple! domino pizza, pizza hut, or taco bell. There are none in the area. WE MUST DRIVE TO Westchester or Connecticut. Any other business WILL NOT make it. Idilcia

Taco Bell would be a big hit.

Does everyone want chains? Is that the consensus here?
Jim Goldstein January 20, 2013 at 09:22 PM
No your right Erin. How about that dance club idea if it were country bands and maybe some bluegrass

I think an Inn of some kind would be great. There are very few places to stay the night in the area.
