County Executive: Refrain from Trick-or-Treating [POLL]

Putnam is in a state of emergency.

Officials are asking residents to make safety their top priority this Halloween and hold off on trick-or-treating Monday evening.

According to a press release sent through the NY-Alert system around 12:50 p.m. Monday, the message comes from Putnam County Executive Paul Eldridge — even though the last thing he wants is "to be the Grinch that stole Halloween."

"... Efforts are continuing that require that all non-essential traffic stay off the roadways while highway and utility crews work to open roads and restore power," the release reads.

The request is backed up with input from Robert McMahon, the county's commissioner of emergency services. He said that downed wires and trees combined with a lack of power and lights — plus icy roadways — all pose threats to children and the rest of the public.

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith also stressed the danger of going from house-to-house in search of Halloween treats.

"All members of law enforcement are deeply concerned for the safety and welfare of all our residents, but especially our must vulnerable populations, our seniors citizens, those with special needs and our children," he said in the release.
