Here is what you need to know today, Jan. 21.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday, falls on the third Monday of January each year.

It pays tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most prominent leaders of the civil rights movement. King believed in peaceful protest and non-violence in the mission for racial equality. He delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on Aug. 28, 1963 in Washington, DC.

King was assassinated April 4, 1968. He was 39 years old.

Here's the list of what is open and closed on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013:

Closed:

  • Banks
  • Brewster Central Schools
  • Brewster Public Library
  • Federal and state offices
  • Town of Southeast offices
  • U.S. post offices 
  • Village of Brewster offices

Open:

  • Pharmacies
  • Retail businesses (including grocery and liquor stores)
  • Restaurants

Call ahead before heading to any other locals establishments (listed here in our directory) to confirm they are open.

Um...Since I live in Southeast, I can't vote for Mayor of the Village of Brewster. So why do youRead More think I, a taxpayer of Southeast, paid for this destruction when I really don't have a clue to what happens in the Village? There's a disconnect that needs to addressed.
