Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday, falls on the third Monday of January each year.
It pays tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most prominent leaders of the civil rights movement. King believed in peaceful protest and non-violence in the mission for racial equality. He delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on Aug. 28, 1963 in Washington, DC.
King was assassinated April 4, 1968. He was 39 years old.
