Walt Kenny: Brewster Resident, Business Owner, Volunteer

Thomas W. ‘Walt’ Kenny Jr., age 82, of Brewster, NY, died on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the NY home for veterans in Montrose, NY.

Mr. Kenny was born in Manhattan, NY on November 28, 1931 to Thomas W. and Rose (McDermott) Kenny. He was graduated from Scarsdale High School and received a bachelor’s in English from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. Mr. Kenny had served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Kenny married Barbara O’Connor on September 10, 1960 in Belleville, NJ. The Kennys made New Fairfield, CT their home for a few years before moving to Brewster 51 years ago.

Mr. Kenny was owner and operator of TWK Service Station (Exxon) in Brewster for over 40 years, retiring in 1997. 

Mr. Kenny’s involvement within the Brewster community was vast to say the least. As a member of St. Lawrence O’Toole Church in Brewster, he gave of his time to coach the boys basketball team, as well as, his being a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a two consecutive term president of the Brewster Lions Club, past member of the Brewster school board, a Brewster schools girls varsity basketball coach, a member of the Brewster ELKS lodge # 2101 and the Brewster Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Kenny was a avid golfer. He also taught golf through the Brewster Continuing Education Program and had won the Westchester Golf Association husband and wife championship and participated in the father and son tournament as well.

Mr. Kenny held strong to his faith and family. He was a loving and gentle man to his family and a fierce friend to many who knew him. He will be missed.

Besides his wife of 53 years, Mr. Kenny is survived by his five children, 
Maureen A. Kenny of Danbury, CT, Thomas W. Kenny III and his wife Janet of 
Poughquag, NY, Patricia Anderson and her husband Garrett of Danbury, CT, Paul 
G. Kenny and his wife Lisa of New Milford, CT and Kathleen McCleary and her 
husband Patrick of Newtown, CT. Two sisters, Patricia H. Coulter of Southbury, CT and Rosemary Weber of Cleveland, NC. Also 15 grandchildren, Meaghan, Conor, Brian, Gregory, Liam, Hannah, Jillian, Sean, Eileen, Molly, Bridget, Deirdre, Clayton, Shea and Cameron. He was predeceased by his brothers Timothy and Peter Kenny.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, 10am at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church in Brewster, NY. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
