Register NOW for FAMILY MATTERS!!

Ossining, NY – Thursday evening, October 24, from 6:30 to 9:15 pm, the Ossining school district and Ossining Communities That Care, in partnership with the Ossining PTA, Proyecto Alcance, SEPTO, and the Open Door are jointly hosting a resource evening at Anne M. Dorner Middle School for parents and guardians of students in grades 5 through 12. Entitled “Family Matters,” the event will include two small-group sessions being presented in English and Spanish, and offer participants their choice of workshops from among twelve different topics that including bully prevention, teen involvement with social media, local policing of underage drinking, effective parent-teen communication techniques, and what Ossining residents can do to check the growth of prescription drug abuse.

Workshop presenters will include some of the OUFSD district’s student counselors, members of the local police department, district technology specialists, local experts and social workers from the Open Door. Each participant will attend two one-hour workshops with a free dinner from Wobble Café in the middle. “We are excited to be able to offer an evening on this scale for the first time, with multiple bilingual workshops,” said Alice Joselow, coordinator of the Ossining Communities That Care coalition.    “Our presenters are all specialists in their various fields, and we are confident that our fifth- through twelfth-grade families will be introduced to some useful information, resources, ideas, and approaches during the course of the evening.”

In citing the goals for “Family Matters,” Joselow noted that raising a teen in the twenty-first century is a challenge.  “Explaining in advance what will happen if a teen is caught at an underage drinking party, or lending some informed perspective on Facebook and Twitter usage can equip parents and guardians to deal effectively and calmly with these issues if and when they come up for real. Just sitting down with other parents and sharing perspectives on the topics we’re featuring can be a big support,” said Joselow, “and support is what we’re about.”
