Cops: Brewster Man Tries to Attack Deputy During Arrest

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office provided the following information. It does not indicate a conviction.

A 39-year-old Brewster man is facing charges after disobeying an official's orders and then attempting to strike him during an arrest, police said.

Deputy Sheriff Thomas Lee arrested Oak Street resident Benjamin C. Pop at the Xtra Mart on North Main Street around 4:35 a.m. Sept. 30, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Wednesday. He's facing a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest, as well as two violations: disorderly conduct and trespassing.

Officials say Lee was responding to a complaint of a drunken man who refused to leave the store.

"Upon arrival, the deputy repeatedly ordered the man to leave the premises," authorities said. "The man ... ignored the deputy’s orders and then attempted to strike the deputy when the deputy attempted to take the man into custody."

Following arraignment in the Brewster Justice Court, Pop was sent to the Putnam County Correctional Facility on $1,500 bail. He will be due to appear again sometime in the near future.
