Police Investigate Fatal Southeast Crash

Officials say speed does not appear to have been a factor.

A 69-year-old Tuckahoe man died Sunday afternoon after an accident that involved a motorcycle and an SUV, according to police.

Members of the  and troopers from the responded to the crash. It occurred on Milltown Road near Green Acres Lane, around 2:20 p.m.

Authorities say Tuckahoe resident Noel DeGaetano, 69, was headed west on a 2011 Kawasaki Ninja. As he negotiated a turn in the roadway, he apparently lost control of the bike, which collided with an eastbound 2006 Toyota RAV4, according to officials.

DeGaetano, who was reportedly wearing a helmet, was pronouced dead at the scene by a Putnam County Coroner, police said. The driver of the Toyota, a 42-year-old New Fairfield, CT resident, was not injured.

"We're still trying to figure out why this happened," Sgt. David Claytor of the state police said.

Officials closed the road and investigated at the scene for more than three hours following the crash. Speed does not appear to have been a factor, Claytor told Patch. Police do not believe either driver was in an impaired state.

I also asked Sgt. Claytor if the turn where the crash occurred is a particularly bad one. He said it's no worse than the other curves on that road.

Ashley, I think the Sgt's remark deserve some context. MIlltown Road is indeed very windy-and hilly- and a split second distraction on a curve could prove to have disastrous consequences. I knew Noel, and this is a terrible loss for the community. He was a local artist with a respected body of work, and had an active exhibit at the Transform Gallery in New Rochelle through October 20. He had quite a few irons in the fire of life, and his loss is significant.

Hi J Philip. I believe you're right, and that is indeed what Sgt. Claytor was saying — that the road is full of bad turns like this one. Thank you for telling us a bit about Noel, who sounds like someone who was talented and well-respected. It looks like he was featured several times on New Rochelle Patch: http://patch.com/bvdGX.
