Police Say Boy Beaten with Belt; Father Charged

Officials at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Brewster called the Putnam County Sheriff's Office April 25 to report suspected child abuse.

Investigators Robert Ferris and John Matrician of the Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation worked with members of the District Attorney’s Office and Child Protective Services to follow up on the complaint.

They charged a 29-year-old Patterson resident with Assault in the Second Degree, a felony and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a misdemeanor.

Police allege the man had hit his 8-year-old with a belt several times, causing welts and substantial pain.

He was arraigned before Patterson Town Justice Anthony Mole and released without bail pending a May 8 court appearance.

Additionally, Justice Mole issued an Order of Protection ordering him to stay away from the boy, police said.
