Sheriff: Southeast Man Dies After Crash

A 79-year-old Southeast man was killed Monday afternoon as the result of a crash, officials say.

The accident occurred about noon at the intersection of Independent Way and Route 312 in Southeast. Patrick J. Gavaghan died hours later at Danbury Hospital in CT.

Gavaghan was driving west on 312. His vehicle collided with one that was headed north on Independence, with an 18-year-old behind the wheel. The latter failed to yield the right of way and crashed into the driver’s side door of Gavaghan, according to a press release from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Members of the Brewster Fire Department extricated Gavaghan, who was trapped. He was treated by TransCare paramedics at the scene. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance. No one else was injured in the crash.

Deputy Christopher Tompkins arrived at the scene after being flagged down by a motorist and notified of the accident. The fire department and TransCare had been dispatched.

The driver of the other vehicle was issued a ticket for failing to yield right of way. She is due in court Aug. 29.

Members of the New York State Police assisted with traffic control at the scene.

The Sheriff's Office is continuing their investigation into the collision.
