Brewster to Join Mayors' Redevelopment Roundtable

The Village of Brewster is joining the Mayors' Redevelopment Roundtable, a network of municipalities organized by the Land Use Law Center at Pace University.

Roundtable organizers reached out to the village with the invitation last month, and the board of trustees voted in favor.

"What is says is that Pace has taken notice of what we're doing," Mayor Jim Schoenig said.

Village leaders are in the process of updating the comprehensive plan. The finished document, and the zoning changes it outlines, will lay the basis for an urban renewal project that details the redevelopment of Brewster.

Communities represented at the roundtable include Beacon, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Newburgh, Peekskill, Port Chester, Poughkeepsie, Rye, Yonkers and White Plains.

Mayors, attorneys and other staff members from those municipalities have been meeting since 2009, looking at practices to help with urban revitalization and the challenges that come with the process. The group has discussed affordable housing, economic development, sustainability planning, transit-oriented development and more.

Schoenig said he expects to start attending meetings after the New Year.
