Local Group Seeks Funding for Garden, Stage at Walter Brewster House

The Landmarks Preservation Society of Southeast has big plans for the Walter Brewster House: a stage and a pathway with a garden leading from Main Street up the front lawn.

Bob Dumont, the organization's president, spoke about the project at a recent 'Envision Brewster' meeting. He said the plan is to build an "entertainment area where you can get a couple hundred people to watch a play, a concert, a show of some kind."

Ideally, the site would offer events that would attract large crowds on a regular basis, Dumont explained.

"That should make it easier for a restaurant, another retail store to open, because you know the traffic exists," he said.

When it comes to cost, the project is "attainable," according to Dumont. The organization plans to submit a Consolidated Funding Application for a grant from New York State.

Donations are also being accepted. They should be sent to Landmarks Preservation at 43 Oak Street, Brewster, NY 10509.

Meghan Taylor, president of the Putnam County Economic Development Corporation, said the project "could potentially be a very big tourist attraction for the Village of Brewster."
