Berardo Named Permanent Athletic Director

Administrators say he's kept all the right values—health, safety, sportsmanship and more—in mind.

A unanimous vote from the Brewster Board of Education Tuesday night removed the word "interim" from Dean Berardo's title.

Berardo stepped into the temporary role of overseeing athletics, health and physical education in the district after Lance Pliego's November 2011 resignation.

Since then, Berardo's performance as interim athletic director has been "stellar," Supertintendent Dr. Jane Sandbank said during her recommendation. For his, High School Principal Dr. Joseph Castagnola commended Berardo for his accessibility and organization.

He also noted that Berardo, a Brewster native who has worked in the district for 25 years, has helped with some disciplinary issues since he took the position last winter.

"It's going to be a big value to our administrative team," Castagnola said, after complimenting Berardo on his oversight of the last home football game. More than 3,000 people attended the nailbiter—which Brewster lost—without incident, the principal told board members.

Berardo received a round of applause from folks at the meeting, which his family members attendend.  he liked the pace of the new position.

"It's not stagnant, that's for sure," he said then. "Everyday is different."
